Is Double Reionization Physically Plausible?

چکیده

Recent observations of z ∼ 6 quasars and the cosmic microwave background imply a complex history to cosmic reionization. Such a history requires some form of feedback to extend reionization over a long time interval, but the nature of the feedback and how rapidly it operates remain highly uncertain. Here we focus on one aspect of this complexity: which physical processes can cause the global ionized fraction to evolve non-monotonically with cosmic time? We first examine how galactic winds affect the transition from metal-free to normal star formation. Because winds expand much more slowly than ionization fronts, we find that this mechanism cannot be responsible for double reionization given plausible parameters for the winds. We next consider photoheating, which causes the cosmological Jeans mass to increase in ionized regions and hence suppresses galaxy formation there. Double reionization is more plausible in this case, but only if small halos form stars efficiently and if the suppression from photoheating is strong relative to current expectations. Finally, we consider H2 photodissociation, in which the buildup of a soft UV background suppresses star formation in small halos. This too can cause the ionized fraction to temporarily decrease, but only during the earliest stages of reionization. For all of these mechanisms, double reionization appears less likely than a long, but still monotonic, ionization history. Finally, we briefly consider the effects of some of these feedback mechanisms on the topology of reionization. Subject headings: cosmology: theory – galaxies: evolution – intergalactic medium

The 21cm Power Spectrum After Reionization

We discuss the 21cm power spectrum (PS) following the completion of reionization. In contrast to the reionization era, this PS is proportional to the PS of mass density fluctuations, with only a small modulation due to fluctuations in the ionization field on scales larger than the mean-free-path of ionizing photons. We derive the form of this modulation, and demonstrate that its effect on the 2...

Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization and reionization: constraining models with a double reionization

Reconstructing the history of cosmic reionization would provide a basic insight on the first objects forming in the world. This is a non trivial task, in view of seemingly contradictory results, as (i) the growth of the neutral hydrogen fraction around QSO’s at z ∼ 6 − 7 and (ii) WMAP estimates of a large optical depth τ, indicating a much earlier reionization. The apparent conflict is overcame...

Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization: constraining models with a double reionization

Neutral hydrogen around high–z QSO and an optical depth τ ∼ 0.17 can be reconciled if reionization is more complex than a single transition at z ≃ 6− 8. Tracing its details could shed a new light on the first sources of radiation. Here we discuss how far such details can be inspected through planned experiments on CMB large-scale anisotropy and polarization, by simulating an actual data analysi...

Very Large H II Regions Around Proto-Clusters of Galaxies During Reionization

The physical basis for the belief that the abundant old dwarf galaxies seen in present-day galaxy clusters formed before reionization of the universe is very compelling, because (1) the observed faint end slope of the galaxy luminosity function ascends from a shallower slope at brighter magnitudes and tracks that of dark matter halo mass function, and (2) that steep power-law slope is observed ...

Fluctuations in 21cm Emission After Reionization

The fluctuations in the emission of redshifted 21cm photons from neutral intergalactic hydrogen will provide an unprecedented probe of the reionization era. Conventional wisdom assumes that this 21cm signal disappears as soon as reionization is complete, when little atomic hydrogen is left through most of the volume of the inter-galactic medium (IGM). However observations of damped Lyα absorber...
